Bachir Benkirane centers his work on the existing built environment; not only for its sustainable value, but for the stories it carries. His approach favors continuity over reinvention, grounded in the belief that there is much to learn, expand on, and document from what already stands or once stood. His interventions are varied in scale and span urban, domestic, and cultural contexts shaped by diverse political and historical settings.
Bachir collaborates closely with local practices, focusing on the preservation and transformation of structures dating from the 1850s to the 1980s. He has also worked and conducted research in a range of offices and institutions, engaging with projects of varying scales centered on transformation and adaptive reuse. In conjunction, he develops smaller-scale explorations that investigate questions of reuse, material expression, and spatial experience. These pieces both inform and are informed by his primary focus, creating a conversation across scales, methods, and mediums.
